Senior Rugby

Wellington's senior club rugby scene comprises seven competition grades, involving the 17 member clubs. The showpiece premier competition is regarded as one of the most competitive in New Zealand.

In 2015 this grade was expanded for the first time in over 20 years to accommodate 14 clubs in the Swindale Shield first round, with Paremata Plimmerton making a return to the top grade for the first time since 1987. The Jubilee Cup second round sees the top 8 club sides in Wellington battle it out for local supremacy. Defending champions, Old Boys University, will be looking to go back to back in 2016, having claimed the Swindale Shield already this season.

Other grades of rugby include the highly popular weight restricted 85kg competition, where Tawa will be hoping to repeat their successes of 2015. The Women's competition has grown in size to 10 teams in 2016 and the competition will be hot during second round action as they battle for Victoria Tavern Trophy glory.

Premier Reserve, Colts (other teams required to be fielded by the 14 premier clubs), First Grade, Reserve and the 'non-competitive' Presidents and Golden Oldies grades make up the rest of senior club rugby in the region.
