Liua’ana Makes History
The Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU) is proud to announce the appointment of Rebecca ‘Becs’ Liua’ana as the new President of Wellington Rugby.
Becs made history last night at the WRFU Annual General Meeting when Chair Russell Poole announced her as the first female and first Pacific Islander to hold the role.
A respected figure in the game, Becs brings a wealth of experience across all facets of rugby, backed by an impressive and accomplished career.
WRFU’s new president says, “It is an honour to be entrusted with such a pivotal role in the future of our great game. Especially being the first Women and Pacific islander to take on this role. It means so much to me because Rugby has always been more than just a sport. It is a community, a source of inspiration, and a tool to form great relationships and see people grow from Grassroots to becoming Professional.
When my parents left the Pasifika Islands of Samoa to seek a better future in New Zealand, it was always in their sights to see us reach our full potential. I feel I need to acknowledge them, my siblings and family for always being my support crew in everything I do with Rugby.
As I take on this responsibility for the next 2 years, I am committed to listening, learning, and collaborating with everyone that I come across, to help guide and shape the vision of Wellington Rugby. I feel we have an exciting future ahead of us, and I look forward to seeing what I can do to help and support Rugby in Wellington become a sport that everyone wants to play and be a part of.”
Bebs succeeds the role from Alan Muir who held the role since 2023 As a rugby community we are grateful for Alan’s commitment during his tenure as WRFU President.
