Pride team named to take on Tasman in home opener
Wellington Pride Head Coach Fusi Feaunati has named his 23 to take on the Tasman Makos this weekend for the opening round at Porirua Park.
This will be the first time the Pride have come up against Tasman since their last clash in 2020, where the Wellington girls soared to victory with a 62-0 defeat.
Jackie Patea-Fereti returns to captain the side for the 11th year in a row, with Fa’asua Makisi and Valini Vaka coming on board as newly appointed Vice-Captains.
“Jackie has been a pillar of Wellington women’s rugby for a long time. Strong leadership plays an important role in this years’ campaign,” Feaunati says of his leadership team,
Among those named are nine debutants, with three of them in the starting XV after an impressive pre-season.
“We’re excited to debut the talented players that have performed consistently throughout the club competition. Alongside our strong group of experienced players, we have confidence and trust that they will perform and do themselves and our community proud.” Feaunati adds.
Valini Vaka starts at Hooker, with support from Petone duo, Angelica Schwencke and Lavinia Lea. Sophie Irving partners with Patea-Fereti in the second row. Fanua Rimoni is set to debut at Loose Forward, with Sinead Ryder and Nina Foaese completing the trio.
Seasoned half-back Milly Mackey starts at number nine, alongside Petone debutant Keira Su’a-Smith at first-five.
Wainuiomata debutant Billi Va’a makes her debut at fullback, with Harmony Kautai and Drenna Falaniko providing support from the wing. Fa’asua Makisi and Shakira Baker form a strong midfield.
Tess Woldring, Roimata Parata, Anyis Drossaerts-Lake, Te Raukura Leafe, Litia Bulicakau and Rebekah Cordero Tufuga look set to debut from the bench, alongside Norths duo Paige Misky and Arene Landon-Lane.
