Counting down to another epic Club Finals Day
The highlight of the Wellington Rugby club calendar is drawing closer as dozens of teams strive to be part of an epic finals day on the last Saturday of July.
The Wellington Rugby club finals day will return to the Petone Recreation Ground on Saturday, July 27.
The inclusion of the First Grade final will see nine finals played amongst a sea of colour and emotion as club supporters line four fields to cheer on their champions.
Teams in the Men’s Premier, Premier Reserve, Colts, First and Women’s grades are preparing for the final playoffs with the semi-finals to go this weekend.
The exception is in the Women’s Division One grade where the teams are playing a double round-robin format before the two top sides go straight into the final.
Club representatives voted earlier this season to hold the finals on the same day as the All Blacks Rugby Championship Test against South Africa at Westpac Stadium and the earlier timing of the matches will allow plenty of time for fans to enjoy two great occasions.
There will be a real family friendly atmosphere at the ground with a dedicated children’s entertainment area while there will also be a variety of food and drink options available.
WRFU Rugby Board Chairman Pete Scott said the annual finals day created a unique atmosphere and one that was fantastic to be part of.
“There is so much tradition and passion on display, on and off the field, that you just can’t help getting caught up in it. It’s certainly an occasion that you want to be part of and a great way to celebrate grassroots rugby in the lead up to the All Blacks test match later in the day.”
Kick-off times will be staggered across the grades with the Jubilee Cup final taking centre stage on the No 1 field at 2.30pm.
The Women’s Tia Paasi Memorial Cup final will also be played on the No 1 field and will kick-off at 12.30pm.
The full schedule of matches will be finalised once all the finalists have been confirmed.
