Exciting local derbies ahead on Anzac Day

|
News

It's a busy day of rugby ahead on Anzac Day, with all 14 Swindale Shield teams playing either Catholic or local rivals. Arguably, the game of the round sees Hutt Old Boys Marist host Marist St Pats. Both teams have attacking threats all over the park, so expect a high-scoring game. In another crunch match, Ories host Poneke- a key game particularly for the away side. Local bragging rights are on the line in all other fixtures, previewed in detail below.

Premier Reserve footy is running as per usual and provide excellent certain-raisers to the big games later in the day

Let's the games begin!

Swindale Shield

Hutt Old Boys Marist v Marist St Pats

Playing for: Father Cleary Shield

Yes, nothing like a Catholic rivalry to headline today's Anzac Day round. Going by recent form, this game is shaping up to be a cracker. HOBM are one of the best attacking teams in the competition although inconsistency has been an issue. MSP got close against the competition leaders last week and expect another big performance today. This one could go to the wire.

Oriental-Rongotai v Poneke

Playing for: Jim Grbich Memorial Shield

This game is a critical one, particularly for Poneke who are desperate to climb off the bottom-half of the ladder. The away side were strong against the Axeman last week, particularly on attack. However, Ories are a patient team who defend well and capitalise on any opportunity. Poneke will need to be at their best to beat an in-form Ories side.

Wainuiomata v Petone

Playing for: Darren Larsen Cup

Wainui will be determined to win today, after failing to capitalise on their opportunities against Ories. Petone must find a way to contain Wainui's big pack and powerful ball-runners led by Tasi Masoe and Ben Tupuola. Petone will be disappointed with their second-half performance last week and they'll need to go the full 80 against strong finishers Wainui.

Johnsonville v Tawa

Playing for: Carman Cup

The Hawks face a tough encounter against local rivals Tawa who have finally found their mojo. Tawa will look to their dangerous midfield combination to create try-scoring opportunities. Johnsonville are also capable of playing enterprising rugby, but they'll need to reduce their error count and ill-discipline to stand a chance. Expect a free-flowing, entertaining game.

Wellington Axeman v Old Boys University

Playing for: Dean Guifford Memorial Cup

Wellington Axeman face an up-hill battle against unbeaten OBU- who will punish any opposition mistakes. The away side have scored an impressive 40 tries this season and have an excellent defensive record. Despite the mammoth task ahead, the Axeman have the ability to give the Goats a run for their money although they'll need to reduce their error count. Watch out for Axeman winger Penijamini Nabainivalu who impressed last weekend.

Northern United v Paremata-Plimmerton

Playing for: Ivan Hargreaves Trophy

Paremata-Plimmerton face a huge task against Norths who have been exceptionally strong. Norths will again rely on their powerful loose-forward trio, led by Antony Fox who was outstanding last weekend. The away side must get off to a quicker start today to stand even the slimmest of chances. Expect Norths to win relatively comfortably.

Upper Hutt v Avalon Wolves

Harper Vine Trophy

Upper Hutt will be aiming for the full 5 points against local rivals Avalon. The Rams are nearing their best, after a bit of a mid-season slump. Expect Upper Hutt's backs to prove too much for the Wolves defence. Watch out for Rams winger Joyner Key who was exceptional last week.
