Satellite 7s Tournament set for tomorrow
The re-scheduled WRFU Satellite 7s Tournament is set to orbit the top fields at Porirua Park tomorrow as the sevens season continues in earnest.
Eight teams are entered in the Men’s event, which has been re-scheduled following an earlier morning cancellation in October. The Women’s section was replayed two weeks ago at Ian Galloway Park.
However, the weather might not be on the side of tournament organisers tomorrow, with heavy rain in the morning giving way to rain in the afternoon in the Porirua area, according to this always-accurate forecasting website here [Link to https://www.yr.no/place/New_Zealand/Wellington/Porirua/]
Should the tournament be cancelled, then the call will be made at 7.00am on all WRFU social media feeds and website.
Should the tournament go ahead as planned, eight teams representing seven clubs will be pitching their marquees on the Porirua Park 3 and 4 fields.
The teams taking part are: Marist St Pat’s, Avalon, Johnsonville, Poneke, Northern United, Paremata-Plimmerton and Wellington (two teams).
Of these, MSP won the Plate final at last weekend’s American Ambassador’s tournament, while Northern United won the Bowl and Paremata-Plimmerton won the Shield.
This tournament is the penultimate one locally for the year, with the Piri Weepu Sevens in the last weekend of November the final chance for supporters to catch a glimpse of local rugby in 2016.
Next weekend the Wellington Men’s (defending champions) and Women’s (third last year) representative teams competing in the Auckland 7s tournament.
The Central Region Sevens tournament, which serves as the qualifier for the National Sevens in the New Year, is in Levin on 10 December.
