WRFU statement: Remembering and mourning Daniel Baldwin
Wellington Rugby would like to thank the wider rugby community for your support over the past days as we collectively deal with the death of Wellington Football Club Colts player Daniel Baldwin.
The WRFU has acted, and will continue to act, with the best interests of the Baldwin family as our priority.
We are proud of the way our rugby family has rallied around those affected by this tragedy.
We encourage anyone who feels the need to talk to someone about Daniel's tragic death to call counselling service InStep on 0800 284 678 for confidential, free, independent professional support sanctioned by NZ Rugby, or alternatively contact Wellington Rugby on 04-389-0020. Don't feel afraid or ashamed to use this service.
WRFU will be organising concussion education and counselling opportunities for all of our colts aged players in coming weeks. We will distribute more information about this initiative shortly. This complements the ongoing work around concussion and player education as part of the RugbySmart programme.
Many are wondering what happens next?
Daniel's death will be the subject of an inquiry led by the Wellington Rugby Football Union, but for now we should pause to remember a bright young man who shared our love for the game.
On Saturday all of our senior and college grade players, coaches, and other match officials will be wearing black armbands and, where appropriate, observing a moment's silence before kick-off.
Daniel's teammates have decided to go ahead with their Colts grade match against Avalon at Hataitai Park. We encourage those who wish to attend the match and show their support to do so, but to also be respectful of the occasion and aware of people's emotions.
For those attending the Hurricanes match at Westpac Stadium tomorrow night, there will be a moment's silence before the teams' take the field and a tribute to Daniel on the big screen. We thank the Hurricanes for their support.
